Design

There are four main things you want to consider when you are designing a website. Contrast, repetition, alignment, and Proximity.

Contrast is the use of colours, tone, size, and shape to make the viewers eye flow naturally across your web page. For headings you might want to use a dark colour for the background and a light colour for the text which will make the heading pop and draw your eye to that feature.

Repetition is making your web page cohesive. You can establish this by using a theme or using all the same backgrounds, colours and text. This will make your page more professional and visually pleasing, use it throughout your web page so everything flows nicely together.

Alignment is making sure all elements in your design are lined up properly. If you have a bulleted list you don’t want to have one of the bullets further indented than the rest, this will distract the eye and won’t look professional. Your web page will come across as lazy and not well put together if stuff isn’t lining up properly.

Proximity allows for visual unity in a design. You should place like objects together. If you have pictures that are related they should be grouped together which will eliminate visual clutter and makes your page look organized and well put together. It also makes reading and finding information on your page a lot easier for the viewer.

There are six different phases of creating a web page and if you follow them they will help you in the process of creating your own web page.

The first step is information gathering. In this step you will want to get a good understanding of your business, the goals for your business and how the web page will help you achieve your goals. Consider what the purpose of your website will be, who your target audience is, and what kind of content you want on your page.

The second step is planning and in this step you can use the information you gathered and put a plan together for you website. Create a site map which will outline the main topics of your site and sub topics. This will help you decide what pages you will need and what content will be on each page.

The third stage is design. During the design process you want to use all the information you have gathered up to this point and decide how you want your web page to look. You will want to consider who your target audience is and aim your design towards them.

The fourth step is development. During this step your website is created and you will want to choose a CMS (content management system) such as Word Press or Wix to make it a functioning web site.

The fifth step is testing your web site out. You will want to try viewing your web page from different computers and different browsers to make sure it works for everyone’s computer. You will want to test all your pages and make sure the links are all correct and everything is working properly.

The sixth and final stage is maintenance. This step is an ongoing process and you will always be doing maintenance to your site. You will want to update your site with current information and new offers and promotions.
